Improving distributors food supply initiative

Initiated and funded by the Victorian Government, the project represents a significant initiative aimed at increasing access to healthier food and drink products in Victorian public settings.

About the Project

The project was an innovative initiative by the Victorian Government to improve the food and beverage supplies available to public health organisations. The review of over 1,700 top-selling products across all sectors was the base for developing an evidence-based framework which highlighted healthier food and drink products as well as other health re-enforcing strategies. The National Nutrition Foundation facilitated the rollout across the state to achieve an improved food procurement system.

Outcomes achieved

The Victorian Department of Health recognised the need for assessment and classification of products against the Healthy Choices: Food and drink classification guide; building capacity and awareness of distributors to these setting to ensure Victorians are provided healthier options across hospitals, health services, sports and recreation centres, and educational facilities.

The Solution

National Nutrition Foundation was trusted to deliver this important project, relying on our evidence-based approach to provide healthier alternatives and recommendations.

We approached this through:

  1. Engagement with food and beverage providers and public health organisations.
  2. Comprehensive analysis, research and classification of over 1700 top-selling food and beverage products.
  3. Initial execution and facilitation of delivery.
    • Continuous consultancy and support to distributors, assisting them in identifying and promoting healthier food and beverage options within the targeted settings.
    • Customised marketing material to enhance engagement with specific clientele to choose and consume healthy food and drink options.
  4. Project expansion and future goals: Following the initial success the project, the project was expanded to collaborating with an additional 14 distributors affiliated with HealthShare Victoria, focusing on the distribution of food and beverage products within Victorian health services. These efforts were designed to assist distributors in effectively promoting healthier options, and enabling procurement staff in various institutions to easily identify and select nutritious products.
