why local food environments matter: insights from NEPHU’s latest report.

1 min read • November 21st, 2025

This inequity shapes what’s available, affordable and ultimately what ends up on our plates.

“Access to nutritious, safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate food is essential to good health and a human right.”

What needs to change

We need stronger planning, policy and funding levers that prioritise local food access, support independent greengrocers and cultural grocers, and empower councils to design healthier, more sustainable food environments.

Because everyone deserves access to nutritious, culturally appropriate and affordable food no matter where they live.
